Unit #2: Science as a Way of Knowing: Critical Thinking about the Environment
Their is many probelms with the Mono Lake in CA ; - mono lake is largest salt lake -the lake is used by many birds for feeding and nesting -The lake is becoming so salty that environmentalist think that it is going to not let shrimp and fly larvae live that feed all these different types of birds The actions they took were at first ask questions which were : -the size of the lake -the ecosystem and how it works -the evaporating system of the Lake To understand the problem they used the scientific method that includes the steps of:
Ask a Question
Do Background Research
Construct a Hypothesis
Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment
Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion
Communicate Your Results
Within the scietific method they hd variables which include : Dependent Variable,Independent Variable, Manipulated variable, Responding Variable California Condor Problems & solutions: Numbers declined to 22 in the 1970’s Suggestions to help populations Remove all from the wild and breed in zoos Improve habitat; returning it to grassland Population to small to divide into two diff. study groups. Captive breeding begun Soltuions: The scientish think they shoudl capture all 22 birds and did a breeding program in which they reproduce and by today their is 300 and 158 in the wild. This processed helped which i think mught be useful for other animals.
Scientific method :)
Hypothesis: an unproven theory that can be tested in several steps
Dependent Variable: rate of photosynthesis Independent Variable: amount of light Manipulated Variable : independent variable because can be changed Responding Variable:dependent variable because it response to change
