Silent Spring
1: What observations did Rachel Carson make about her environment? Explain in detail.
Before the whole environmental problem she describe it as very calm and beautiful in a way it had many roads, and large masses of land with green fields and the skies were nice with while clouds. She also described it with birds that always sang in spring. After she did not describe it like that anymore but much more sad. She states that many sounds of the birds you heard n the spring were not heard anymore. The farmers were having trouble with their hens and pigs. The bees would not pollinate and everything was at trouble.
2: How have chemicals changed the environment? What is DDT? What is it used for and what
-Chemicals are being released into the environment and passed into animals and plants as we eat and breathe and is harming us and the plants giving less life spam for them.
-DDT is chemical used to kill off bugs and insect that are always eating on crops
-This chemical is toxic and can harm
are the consequences of its use?
-"It has happened also because, for reasons to be described later, destructive insects often undergo a "flareback," or resurgence, after
spraying, in numbers greater than before."
-This means that the spray does not always work on every bug after being sprayed several times
3: Carson uses Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Less Traveled, as an analogy for making choices
about our future- what does she say about what we must do?
-She says its our choice in which road to take and chose from but we should open up and look about and see what course is open to us, we should not accept the fact that we should live with those poisonous chemicals in the air and get adapted to them.
4: This book was written in 1962- have people heeded the warning about the toxins in our
environment?
-I think that people have no heeded about the toxins in our environment because we still have a lot of troubles in the air many countries dont have fresh air anymore
5: What is your opinion of the book excerpt? Explain.
- I think that the book excerpt has very strong point and opinions that can be applied to today. Such as the chemicals we breathe the air quality is not as bad but it still slowly increasing. Many places already don't have fresh air and its very sad seeing that. We have a say and power and should not be adapted to this types of environments.
