Population, Poverty
and the Local Environment
*Important Points*
-. Some would point to pop- ulation growth as the cause of poverty and environmental degradation. Others would permute the elements of this causal chain, arguing, for example, that poverty is the cause rather than the con- sequence of increasing numbers.
- Focusing on the vast numbers of small, rural communities in the poorest regions of the world, the work has iden- tied circumstances in which popula- tion growth, poverty and degradation of local resources often fuel one another.
-The collected research has shown that none of the three elements directly caus- es the other two; rather each inuences, and is in turn inuenced by, the others.
-Those who enjoy the greatest power within a family can often be iden- tied by the way the households re- sources are divided.
- Judith Bruce of the Population Council, Mayra Buvinic of the International Center for Research on Women, Lincoln C. Chen and Amartya Sen of Harvard University and others have observed that the sharing of re- sources within a household is often un- equal even when dierences in needs are taken into account.
-Another indicator of the price that women pay is maternal mortality. In most poor countries, complications re- lated to pregnancy constitute the larg- est single cause of death of women in their reproductive years.
- Data on the status of women from 79 so-called Third World countries display an unmistakable pat- tern: high fertility, high rates of illitera- cy, low share of paid employment and a high percentage working at home for no paythey all hang together.
- But the ndings are con- sistent with the possibility that lack of paid employment and education limits a womans ability to make decisions and therefore promotes population growth.
-Third World countries are, for the most part, subsistence economies. The rural folk eke out a living by using prod- ucts gleaned directly from plants and animals
-Children, then, are needed as work- ers even when their parents are in their prime. Small households are simply not viable; each one needs many hands. In parts of India, children between 10 and 15 years have been observed to work as much as one and a half times the number of hours that adult males do.
-This analysis suggests that the way to reduce fertility is to break the de- structive spiral. Parental demand for children rather than an unmet need for contraceptives in large measure ex- plains reproductive behavior in devel- oping countries.

Summary
This article was about the population growth and where specifically does this fall for. For example this article gives the statistics that countries that are in poverty tend to have higher population size due to having more kids. People have discussion in which is the core problem. The core problem as some say is that the population growth is the cause of poverty and environmental degradation. in Other peoples vies this is the opposite poverty causes high population growth. The collected research has shown that none of the three elements directly causes the other two; rather each influences, and is in turn influenced by, the others. The purpose of giving such information is that women don't have control over themselves. In many cases women don't really have control over themselves. Many countries have priorities over men because is many cases families have to pay other to get their girls married and many families don't have a lot of money. Usually third world countries are the ones that encounter the problem of being poor and not having enough money to have a stable life.
My opinion
In my opinion we need to set more rules for which in women can have decisions over their bodies. Many third world countries have high populations due to these factors as well as the need for help, they need their children to get jobs to help them out of poverty, or more boy to get benefits from it. The policies in which women can be helped can be also set to educate women ad men about birth control and condoms. In many cases the women are not aware of the steps they can take to prevent from getting pregnant. In my opinion this is a big problem because we should have to focus on the population getting bigger but just focusing on how to stable ourselves. We don't have any places that are stable we are all contributing to the collapse of the world.
So what?
-if the population grow we can have more poverty in the world and distributing people in the world would be difficult. What if? -If we don't take action upon it many of us would suffer we do have the pace we just need to stabilize ourselves. |
Says who?
The process in which the world is going just shows the rate in which we are falling. The big picture peaks for itself. What does this remind me of? -This reminds me of the recent video we watched in apes class on how the statistics show that through time we are going to leave precious cities we once saw the greatest accomplishments for us. |
