APES- Biodiversity Hotspots Activity
Objective: To teach students what hotspots are as well as the characteristics of these critical
habitats.
Materials: Computer with Internet access
Procedure: Go to the website www.biodiversityhotspots.org.
Choose one of the biodiversity hotspot to study
Create a 1 page handout that explains the following information:
Analysis:Asia-Pacific, SUNDALAND
1. List one animal and one plant that are native to this area.
-Southeast Asia rhino
-Scyphostegiaceae
-Rafflesia arnoldii
2. In which country is this hotspot located?
- western half of the Indo-Malayan archipelago
-In Asia western half
3. Is this country a developing or a developed nation?
-Developing
4. What human activity is contributing to the biodiversity loss in this area?
-Forest destruction
- rubber production, pulp production, and commercial and illegal logging.
5. What, if anything, is being done to protect this hotspot?
On Borneo, trans boundary conservation areas, or peace parks, are being promoted as a form of international cooperation and ecosystem protection.
There is also wide variation in the actual levels of protection and management among parks and reserves
