Changes in Ecosystems:
Ecological Succession
Primary Succession:
Some actions of primary succession could be : –Sides of volcanoes – Landslides – Flooding -These consist of no more soil where it would take a long time for organisms to adapt to this place or come back. It starts with pioneer species -Soil starts to form as lichens and the forces of weather and erosion help break down rocks into smaller pieces -The decomposition of lichens brings nutrients and and organic matter to make soil |
Lichens:
-Symbiotic relationship between algae and fungus -They are photosynthetic -reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide Lichens-Pioneer Species: -Lichens help to break down hard substrate, providing nutrients to the soil -Lichens are also called “indicator species”- they are sensitive to changes in environment |
