Human Population Grows Up
*Before 2000, young people always outnumbered old people. From 2000 forward, old people will outnumber young people. Until approximately 2007, rural people will have always out- numbered urban people. From approxi- mately 2007 forward, urban people will outnumber rural people. From 2003 on, the median woman worldwide had, and will continue to have, too few or just enough children during her lifetime to replace herself and the father in the fol- lowing generation.
*Global human population growth rates have probably risen and fallen numerous times in the past.
* Rapid population growth will boost human numbers by nearly 50 percent, from 6.5 billion now to 9.1 billion in 2050. Virtually all this growth will happen in existing or new cities in developing countries. During the same period, many richer nations will lose population. Falling fertility and increasing longevity worldwide will expand the proportion of potentially dependent elderly people.*Create a bigger pie, and fewer forks, and better manners: Intensify human productive capacity through investment in education, health and technology. Increase access to reproductive health care and contraception to voluntarily slow population growth. Improve the terms of people’s interactions by reforming economic, political, civil and social institutions, policies and practices and achieving greater social and legal equity.
-Global population projections depend on assumptions about human choices. The medium projection of 9.1 billion people in 2050 assumes fertility will continue its downward trend If women had, on average, just one-half child more than assumed, 2050 population would be 10.6 billion With one-half child less per woman, it would be 7.7 billion If 2005 fertility rates remained constant to 2050, population would reach 11.7 billion
-One agricultural worker today feeds herself and one city dweller on average. In 2050 she will have to feed herself and two urbanites.
-No one knows the path to sustainability because no one knows the destination, if there is one. But we do know much that we could do today to make tomorrow better than it would be if we do not put our knowledge to work.
-in the short term, our planet can provide room and food, at least at a subsistence level, for 50 percent more people than are alive now because humans are already growing enough cereal grains to feed 10 billion people a vegetarian diet.

Summary
This articles focus was on the population and its growth. It was also focused on how this can affect us in the long term and how we can fix it if w actually do try to fix it. The article gives many statistics to actually back up its information. In 2000 young people had always outnumbered old people, and from them 2000 and on the old people outnumbered the young people. This is because of the proper use of medication and how people are getting more jobs and money to waste that they have children later. Until 2007 rural people outnumbered the urban people. That is that people are moving into cities and their is less farmers and people that produce food. Women now a days don't really focus on having children opportunities for them are so high that they focus on the education and just hanging out for a while and worrying about have kids later. The rates in which population is high has not always been the same because the population has risen and fallen it just needs to find and stable point. The statistics show that by 2050 the population will be at 9.1 billion. This will happen mostly in big cities. No ones know exactly the rate in which are going to grow and what will be the final pint in which we can hold anymore people on earth because no one knows the exact point. What we do know is that if it keeps rising it would be a negative outcome. For the stability of some animals to happen many people on earth would have to turn to be vegetarian.
My own Opinion
In my opinion i believe that we as humans are just looking at the short term problems of having a increasing population size. Their is long terms problems but i think that a lot of people are not educated enough to know that the world would not be able to contain all those people. The main goal should be to educate all these people.. Just knowing that the population size can be at 9 billion is really hard to believe because now we suffer from keeping the amount of resources we use stable. I think tat actions should be taken such as limiting the amount of kids that should be born per family. Usually in poor countries the population tends to be high and to keep that from happening we should use money that we waste on other things and help and educate these people. Through the process of education many goals can be achieved.
What if?
-If we keep letting the population get higher than many negatives problems can happen such as not having enough resources for everyone So what? -This is important due to the fact that this is our future in our own hands |
Says who?
-Not only do researchers view this as a problem but also people who are environmentally concerned What does this remind me of? -This reminds me of a cup slowly being poured water into and then suddenly reaching the top and spilling |
