APES- Terrestrial Biomes Review
Vocabulary
Understand and be able to apply each of these terms.
1. Biome:Biomes are climatically and geographically defined as similar climatic conditions on the Earth, such as communities of plants, animals, and soil organisms, and are often referred to as ecosystems.
2.Climate: The climate of a location is affected by the latitude, terrain, and altitude, as well as nearby water bodies and their currents.
3. RainShadow: dry area on the leeward (back side) of a mountainous area. The mountains block the passage of rain-producing weather systems casting a "shadow" of dryness behind them.
4.WindWard: Wind direction, "side of the boat" Which is upwind from the point of the reference.
5.Leeward: The direction downwind for the point of the reference
6. Latitude: Geographic cordinate that specifies the north-south position of the point on the earths surface.
7.Longitude: The commonly used to define the place that is above sea level. "Height"
8. Primary Succession: it is the gradual growth of an ecosystem over a longer period.
9. Secondary Succession:As opposed to primary succession, secondary succession is a process started by an event that reduces an already established ecosystem to a smaller population of species.
10. Tropical: Used in the term of Tropical Climate, which means warm to hot and moist, and often with the lush vegetation.
11. Temperate: temperate latitudes of the globe lie between the tropics and the polar regions. The changes in these regions between summer and winter are generally relatively moderate, rather than extreme hot or cold.
12. Desert: Little precipitation, (hot or cold)
13:Polar: Receives less solar radiation because sun arrives at a oblique angle and its very cold most of the year.
Critical Thinking
Read, analyze, and give complete answers to these questions.
1. Describe the rainshadow effect and explain how it can alter the climate of the windward and leeward sides of a mountain range.
The rainshadow affect is the back side of the mountain that saty dry, The mountains block the passage of rain-producing weather systems casting a "shadow" of dryness behind them. This can alter the climaye of the windward and leeward sides of the mountain range because, if it rains for exaple the water will go downwards which means Leeward but it wotn go upwards because they are getting blocked because it is a mountain and it blocks.
2. What effect does living near a large ocean or lake have on average air temperatures? Why?- The effect it has on the air temperature would be that the air would be cooler because climate gets affected by the latitude, terrain, and altitude, as well as nearby water bodies and their currents.
Explain.
4. For each category of biomes, give a major human impact and list 2 endangered species:
a. Deserts – Off roading, Their vehicles leave tracks on the soil, which will scar the land for decades. These tracks also kill off vegetation. ; Kangaroo rat, Gila Monster
b. Grasslands –Today, because of over grazed land and over worked soil, only five percent of the original prairie remains. Over grazed grasslands in Australia and South America have caused native animals to compete for food. ;Black Rhinocerous- Grevy’s Zebra
c. Forests –Also, logging pollutes the water and the air. As soil is washed away by water, it usually ends up in fast, clear water streams. The excess soil slows up streams and threatens fish species.: Owls, Monarch Butterfly
d. Mountains –The alteration of the natural fire regime has changed water, nitrogen, and carbon cycles. The denser forest of smaller trees that has resulted is more prone to disease, insects, and large fires ; Canada Lynx, Boreal Toad
Climatograph
Use the data provided to construct a climatograph. Remember: Temperature should be displayed as a line graph and precipitation as a bar graph.

Climatograph
Use the data provided to construct a climatograph. Remember: Temperature should be displayed as a line graph and precipitation as a bar graph.
Identify the biome in the climatogram above- what evidence supports your answer. Give specific observations
from your graph to justify this answer.
-The one that is a biome is the one in may with 13 of precipitation and 42 (C). This is a biome because the precipitation is regulated an its not extremely low and not extremely high. It matches in my point of view with the temperature because it seems like a fair amount and the other don't make sense such as the 18 of precipitation and low temperature.
