Bozeman Science: Ecosystems Guided Viewing
1: What is primary productivity? What do we measure it in? (units)
-Ecosystems are tied in with the environment and the Environment its tied in with energy and the matter but the matter has to be recycled and the combination of both completes primary productivity.
-Primary productivity can be high or low and it the producers in an area and how much biomass they are leaving out
- It is measured (g/C/m2/yr)
2: What are producers? Who are the main producers in the ocean? How is this measured in an
aquatic environment?
-Producers are the main animal for the food web or the ones that are helpful, they are the autotrophs and produce energy though photosynthesis
3: What is a trophic level? List and define the trophic levels. (Give examples)
-Trophic level just means an eating level
-Level one is the producers (algae)
-Level two is consumers (cant make and get its own food)
-Third level and are secondary consumers
-Fourth level is the third level consumers
In which direction does the arrow go in a food web? Explain
-The arrow is like a "pacman" the arrow where its facing is what is getting eaten the other end is what is gonna eat it.
4: What is a food web? How is it different than food chains?
-A food web is the combination of all the food chains put together and its more specific and more broad. It shows all the interactions
5: Explain the limiting factors for growth in ecosystems. Explain logistic growth.
-They can be things such as its too crowded, not enough food, or much competition
6: What is the carrying capacity (K) of an ecosystem?
-The carrying capacity is the maximum level of how much that environment can hold of that specific organism
7: What factors affect the carrying capacity of a population? Explain how wolves and elk populations are linked and how they will reach equilibrium.
-They wolves were put in this environment and they put them in enclosure to make sure they did not run back to Canada and the way it can be affected is the resources they have for them and the competition
8: Summarize the story of the Whitebark Pine and how humans can impact an entire ecosystem
by choices we make (directly or indirectly).
-It is in Yellowstone park and because of global warming and when the temperature increases they cant take it and they will die off
